Can taking vitamin D and fish oil supplements help protect us from developing cancer or cardiovascular disease? Boston researchers are preparing to find out with the launch of a large, national trial that will involve approximately 20,000 healthy older people.
Of those, 5,000 will be African Americans a population of people who exhibit higher rates of cancer, heart disease and stroke compared to whites. African-Americans have a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency and a greater frequency of certain types of cancer and diabetes and hypertension, so I think that it will be of great importance to look at whether something as simple as taking a vitamin D supplement can narrow these health gaps, explains Dr. JoAnn Manson of the Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Womens Hospital. It is believed that the darker skin makes African Americans less able to generate vitamin D from absorbing sunlight.
The study, which will begin early next year and extend over a five-year period, is being funded by the National Institutes of Health. According to Dr. Manson, it is one the first large-scale randomized trials to target a specific group at higher risk for a deficiency of nutrients. She notes that while such vitamin supplements as vitamin E, C, beta carotene, folic acid and selenium have shown promise in terms of disease prevention, their benefits have never been proven in large-scale trials. Fish oil has been studied in larger trials, but only with people who have had heart attacks or diabetes.
Participants will be randomly assigned into four groups, with some taking 2,000 international units of vitamin D and approximately 1 gram of fish oil daily. Others will be given pills that have no active ingredients, while two other groups will take a real supplement and one placebo of either vitamin D or fish oil. s most exciting is these low-cost supplements have the potential for a tremendous reduction in the burden of chronic disease in this country and throughout the world if they are shown to be effective, says Dr. Manson. s what this is all about: to get rigorous high quality information about the balance between the benefits and risks of taking moderate to high doses of these supplements.

As the link between diet and cancer becomes clearer, and studies show some links between certain foods and cancer, people are increasingly looking to nutrition as a way to prevent or even survive cancer. Todays Miami Herald features an interesting story on the conflicting advice the public receives on what to eat or not eat to prevent cancer. While all are in agreement that there are  links between nutrition and cancer, some maintain a strict vegetarian diet, cutting out all meat and dairy products is the best way, others disagree.  
But the public, and cancer survivors in particular, say they are trying to educate themselves on how foods might relate to cancer after getting little information from their doctors on the matter other than general recommendations for an overall healthy diet. Part of the problem: there is little agreement on what actual foods comprise a cancer-preventative diet, with hundreds of studies for people to sift through, some with conflicting information. For example, soy-based products, which were touted as recently as last year as a potential tool for cancer prevention, have now been linked to certain types of breast cancer.
However, agreement has become fairly universal on some basic diet recommendations among them, to eat more than five servings of varied fruits and vegetables a day (the more colorful, the better), choose fiber and multigrains, and eat lean meat such as chicken and fish. People are advised to reduce their consumption of red meat beef, lamb and pork as well as cured meat such as cold cuts and hot dogs, fat in general and alcohol.
Few studies have conclusively linked certain foods and drinks to cancer, but there are a couple. One food-cancer link involves cured meats such as cold cuts, which have been shown to cause colorectal cancer in several studies published in the Journal of American Medicine in 2005, the International Journal of Cancer in 2006 and others.
And alcohol has been linked to breast, stomach, esophageal and colon cancer in studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1998, the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2004 and the British Journal of Cancer in 2002. However, some medical researchers have speculated that red wine might actually protect women from breast cancer basing their theory on studies on red wines positive effects on heart disease and prostate cancer risk. A 2006 study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention of 6,327 women with breast cancer and 7,558 healthy women concluded that neither red wine nor white wine had any effect on cancer risk. But it said women taking more than 14 drinks a week of any kind of alcohol had a slightly higher cancer risk.
Also, obesity in general has been linked to cancer of the breast for women who have gone through menopause, as well as colon, uterus, esophagus and kidney cancers. As a result, the American Cancer Society recommends a healthy, low-fat diet in general the same basic prescription from other medical groups, such as the American Heart Association.
When you look at all the evidence, its the mix of foods that people eat that offers the most protection, its the synergy of antioxidants and vitamins not just one food, said Colleen Doyle, director of nutrition and physical activity at the American Cancer Society. A story will come out eat blueberries and you wont get cancer. There isnt evidence that one food alone will prevent cancer.
One of the key things to keep in mind is, even more than what foods people eat, its how much they eat, she added. People really need to watch their weight to reduce the cancer risk.
Though its philosophy and advice to avoid meats and dairy products at all costs sometimes clashes with other groups such as the American Cancer Society, there is general agreement that fruits and vegetables are important parts of the diet.
Diet is very individualized, said Dee Sandquist, a dietician in Portland, Maine, and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. We look at the total diet approach gradually increasing fruits and vegetables, adding in exercise. Everyone is genetically different. We certainly do need more research.

A new report from the USDA says that farmers and ranchers could turn manure into energy without taking too much of it out of the fertilizer market.
This story from Biomass Magazine says the report, entitled “Manure Use for Fertilizer and for Energy,” points out that turning manure into energy is really underused in this country:
Interest is growing in manure-to-energy systems, but implementation remains scarce in the United States. Anaerobic digestion and combustion are the most common processes used to obtain carbon dioxide and methane for electricity generation, the report says. Most digesters are on-farm systems at dairy and hog farms and combustion can be beneficial to fuel large power plants with poultry litter and fed cattle manure, which have higher energy and lower moisture content. Only one combustion plant operates in the U.S., using litter from 6.6 percent of turkey production. Digestion systems cover less than 3 percent of dairy cows and less than 1 percent of hogs, according to the report.
Using manure for energy won’t impose substantial constraints on manure for fertilizer supplies, the report says, because the technologies do not consume the nutrients that are beneficial for plant growth. In anaerobic digestion, the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium remain in the effluent to be spread on fields. Digestion also eliminates odors and nearly eliminates pathogens, according to the report. Combustion plants do burn nitrogen nutrients, but leave the phosphorous and potassium in concentrated form in the ash residues. In addition, manure-to-energy projects function in markets for fertilizer and energy and will be most economical in those areas where acquisition costs of manure are lowest, the report says. In turn, manure costs will be lowest where manure is in excess supply, with the least value as fertilizer, the report said.
The report goes on to say that economics is still the big stumbling point for wider implementation. Just 91 commercial dairy farms and 17 hogs farms were using digesters to turn the manure into energy, and there are few commercial combustion plants in the U.S. But it does believe that will change if theres more public support for such ventures.

Human embryonic stem cells are defined as cells that are derived from the inner cell mass of blastocyst stage human embryos, are capable of dividing without differentiating for a prolonged period in culture, and are known to develop into cells and tissues of the three primary germ layers, making the distinction that lthough hESCs are derived from embryos, such stem cells are not themselves human embryos. The Guidelines establish a new NIH stem cell registry, and stem cells will be eligible for funding if they are listed on the registry or if they comply with Section IIA of the Guidelines. Cells will be eligible if they are derived from human embryos:
1. that were created using in vitro fertilization for reproductive purposes and were no longer needed for this purpose;
2. that were donated by individuals who sought reproductive treatment (hereafter referred to as ) and who gave voluntary written consent for the human embryos to be used for research purposes; and
3. for which all of the following can be assured and documentation provided, such as consent forms, written policies, or other documentation, provided:
a. All options available in the health care facility where treatment was sought pertaining to the embryos no longer needed for reproductive purposes were explained to the individual(s) who sought reproductive treatment.
b. No payments, cash or in kind, were offered for the donated embryos.
c. Policies and/or procedures were in place at the health care facility where the embryos were donated that neither consenting nor refusing to donate embryos for research would affect the quality of care provided to potential donor(s).
d. There was a clear separation between the prospective donor(s)s decision to create human embryos for reproductive purposes and the prospective donor(s)s decision to donate human embryos for research purposes. Specifically:
i. Decisions related to the creation of human embryos for reproductive purposes should have been made free from the influence of researchers proposing to derive or utilize hESCs in research. The attending physician responsible for reproductive clinical care and the researcher deriving and/or proposing to utilize hESCs should not have been the same person unless separation was not practicable.
ii. At the time of donation, consent for that donation should have been obtained from the individual(s) who had sought reproductive treatment. That is, even if potential donor(s) had given prior indication of their intent to donate to research any embryos that remained after reproductive treatment, consent for the donation for research purposes should have been given at the time of the donation.
iii. Donor(s) should have been informed that they retained the right to withdraw consent for the donation of the embryo until the embryos were actually used to derive embryonic stem cells or until information which could link the identity of the donor(s) with the embryo was no longer retained, if applicable.
e. During the consent process, the donor(s) were informed of the following:
i. that the embryos would be used to derive hESCs for research;
ii. what would happen to the embryos in the derivation of hESCs for research;
iii. that hESCs derived from the embryos might be kept for many years;
iv. that the donation was made without any restriction or direction regarding the individual(s) who may receive medical benefit from the use of the hESCs, such as who may be the recipients of cell transplants;
v. that the research was not intended to provide direct medical benefit to the donor(s);
vi. that the results of research using the hESCs may have commercial potential, and that the donor(s) would not receive financial or any other benefits from any such commercial development;
vii. whether information that could identify the donor(s) would be available to researchers.
Alternatively (Section IIB), for stem cell lines established prior to promulgation of these Guidelines, eligibility can be established by submitting evidence to a newly-constituted Working Group of the Advisory Committee to the Director showing that the hESCs were derived from human embryos: 1) that were created using in vitro fertilization for reproductive purposes and were no longer needed for this purpose; and 2) that were donated by donor(s) who gave voluntary written consent for the human embryos to be used for research purposes.
The Guidelines expressly prohibit funding of research on human embryonic stem cells or pluripotent cells introduced into a non-human primate blastocyst or animal breeding experiments involving introduction of human stem cells into non-human primate blastocysts.

SANTA ROSA, Calif. BUSINESS WIRE Just as wine is often best enjoyed years after its original bottling, Kendall-Jackson Winery expects to see the benefits of an energy-efficient lighting solution for years to come. The California winery aims to save more than $100,000 annually in energy and maintenance costs as a result of an energy efficiency program that features innovative new lighting from GE Consumer Industrial.

Kendall-Jackson's Kittyhawk location, a central production and storage facility, provided the main stage for the lighting retrofit. The 11.5-acre location includes a high-bay area that contains mostly barrels and cased goods, and a low-bay area that houses production and bottling operations. The facility's previous lighting design relied on a 400-watt metal halide system throughout.

Building a team of energy-focused leaders

A focus on quality led Kendall-Jackson to engage Energy Industries and GE in 2008 to develop ideas for energy-focused projects. The team identified Kendall-Jackson's lighting as a primary target and met with lighting engineers at the GE Lighting and Electrical Institute in Cleveland to formulate the best possible lighting solution.

"Our meeting of the minds effectively closed the loop on all the brainstorms, debates and discussions that Kendall-Jackson conducted in search of the optimal solution," says John Strainic, global lighting product general manager, GE Consumer Industrial.

The result was a customized approach segmenting each area according to use, incorporating GE's combined lamp-ballast solution with MetalOptics Greenbay fixtures, a high-intensity fluorescent solution that couples energy savings with environmental savings by significantly reducing packaging, material waste, weight, floor space requirements and installation times.

Kendall-Jackson opted for the GE T5 Watt-Miser system with shatter-resistant covRguard technology in more active areas such as bottling and blending, and GE Ecolux T8 fluorescent lamps in case goods and barrel storage areas. NEMA Premium UltraStart high-efficiency ballasts from GE are at work in all locations.

"This segmented lighting design allows Kendall-Jackson to maximize functionality while minimizing energy costs," explains Eric Leber, Regional Manager of Energy Industries. "Areas with lower light requirements were adjusted to meet their exact application and provide even greater returns."

The path to even greater efficiency

"At Kendall-Jackson, our business principles hinge upon hard work, integrity, an uncompromising desire for quality and the long-term stewardship of the land," says Boller. "We see this lighting retrofit as a milestone in our energy efficiency program."

Kendall-Jackson has the lighting systems in all the production areas of its Kittyhawk facility on controls. For example, it uses sensor shields in certain areas to limit false activations, so forklifts operating up and down the aisles wont trip fixtures even ten feet away. That translates to more energy savings, notes Boller. In addition, Kendall-Jackson is considering how Energy Industries and GE's breadth of experience in areas such as efficient lighting, solar, wind, motors and drives could further increase the energy efficiency of its operations.

The successful lighting upgrade at Kendall-Jacksons Kittyhawk location is now serving as the model for additional lighting upgrades across more than a dozen facilities, including wine tasting rooms, warehouses, offices and exterior applications.

"We are continuing to identify and shape the best long-term energy solutions for Kendall-Jackson," says Boller. "Theres so much more that were looking to accomplish."

Chart your time from one month to the next; on a calendar X out everyday that your on your period (start to end), then do it again next month..X out the days (start to end)..
